Scott Colom is a District Attorney who is running in the 2026 Mississippi Senate race. A lifelong Mississippi resident, Colom was born in Columbus in 1982 and graduated from Millsaps College in 2005. After a year teaching in Guyana with WorldTeach, he earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2009. Following law school, Colom returned to Mississippi as a Skadden Fellow with the Mississippi Center for Justice, representing low-income clients and advocating for consumer protection reforms. He later joined Colom Law Firm, where he practiced civil litigation until 2016. In 2011, at the age of 28, Colom was appointed as a Lowndes County Interim Justice Court Judge by the county’s Board of Supervisors. He made history in this role as he was the youngest and first Black justice court judge in the county’s history. He later served as Municipal Judge for Aberdeen and, in 2013, became Columbus’s first Black city prosecutor while continuing private practice. In 2015, Colom was elected District Attorney for Mississippi’s 16th Circuit District, defeating a 30-year incumbent, and was reelected in 2019. As District Attorney, he oversees an 11-person office, manages felony prosecutions, and has emphasized alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders through restorative justice, expanded diversion programs, rehabilitation, job placement, and education initiatives. Colom has also supported several high-profile justice reforms, including the release of Steven Jessie Harris after 11 years without trial, dismissing charges against a mother when evidence failed to support the case, and supporting the exoneration of a man who spent 23 years on death row based on discredited forensic evidence. Colom lives in Columbus with his wife and two daughters
