James Talarico has served in the Texas House of Representatives since January 2019. He was originally elected to represent Texas House District 52, which includes parts of Williamson County in Central Texas, just north of Austin. Following the 2022 election, redistricting in Texas redrew the majority of the 52nd district into what is now the 50th district. Talarico ran for the 52nd District in 2024 and won reelection for a third term to the Texas House. Talarico is an eighth-generation Texan who grew up in East Austin. He was raised by a single mother who left an abusive relationship and worked hard to provide a better life for her family. Before entering politics, Talarico taught sixth-grade Language Arts at Rhodes Middle School on the west side of San Antonio, one of the poorest zip codes in Texas. There, he witnessed how students struggled against poverty and systemic barriers, inspiring him to commit himself to running for public office. In 2018, Talarico ran for the Texas House and ultimately flipped the 52nd district, which was a Republican-held district that President Donald Trump had won in 2016. As a legislator, he has passed major bills to fund public schools, expand job opportunities, and lower the cost of child care, housing, and prescription drugs. Talarico currently lives in the Austin area.
