Rep. Figures has been serving as the U.S. House of Representatives for Alabama’s 2nd congressional district since 2025. Prior to Congress, Figures worked as a field organizer for Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign in Akron, Ohio, before serving in the Obama administration as Domestic Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and later as liaison to Attorney General Loretta Lynch. He then became legislative counsel to Senator Sherrod Brown, worked on President Joe Biden’s presidential transition, and served as deputy chief of staff to Attorney General Merrick Garland until resigning in October 2023.
Alabama’s 2nd congressional district is located in the southeastern part of the state and includes parts of the city of Dothan. In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that Alabama’s congressional map — which packed Black voters into one of the state’s seven districts — violated the Voting Rights Act. The state was ordered to draw a new map in which two districts were present where Black residents made up a plurality of voters. Following the Callais decision, the Supreme Court has allowed Alabama to revert back to a map with just one majority-Black seat. Immediately after the decision was passed down, Alabama passed a law enacting an unconstitutional map that was drawn by the Legislature in 2023. A lower court again ruled that this map intentionally discriminates against Black voters. Yet in the wake of Callais, the Alabama Supreme Court overruled that order, enacted the 2023 map, and paved the way for Republicans to pick up another seat. Following the Callais ruling, AL-02 PVI shifted from D+4 to R+7. In November, Rep. Figures will be facing off against Republican State Representative Rhett Marques.
