Rep. Laura Gillen

District: NY-04
Cook Political Ranking: Toss Up
Performance Voter Index: D+2
Rep. Laura Gillen was elected to serve New York’s 4th Congressional district in 2024. Prior to Congress, Rep. Gillen served as the Town Supervisor of Hempstead, NY, America’s largest township. New York’s 4th Congressional District is based in central and southern Nassau County. In 2022, NY-04 was an open seat, as former Rep. Kathleen Rice didn’t seek reelection. Gillen faced Republican candidate, Anthony D’Esposito, a former police officer and town council member. Gillen lost in 2022 by about 4 percentage points (9,751 votes). The 2024 race was a much anticipated rematch where Gillen unseated the incumbent and won by more than 2 percentage points (8,603 votes).

Gillen out fundraised D’Esposito for the second time. She raised $6.7 million compared to D’Esposito’s $4.5 million. New York is the largest television market in the country, making congressional districts like NY-04 incredibly expensive and prime for outside spending. In 2024, super PACs, national party committees, and other non-candidate groups collectively spent nearly $24 million in this race.
