Rep. Gabe Vasquez has been the U.S. House Representative for New Mexico’s 2nd congressional district since 2023. Prior to Congress, his career experience included working as a journalist, as the executive director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, and as the field representative for U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM). Vasquez also served on the District 3 City Council for Las Cruces.

New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District encompasses the city of Las Cruces, the second largest city in the state, and western portions of Albuquerque, the largest. Through redistricting, Democrats redrew the GOP-held 2nd district ahead of the 2022 race to concede portions of the northeast seat, making the seat significantly more blue and competitive. In Rep. Vasquez’s 2024 race he faced former Republican Rep. Yvette Herrell who was seeking to unseat Vasquez after losing this seat to him in the 2022 election. Vasquez won the 2024 election by more than 4 percentage points (11,032 votes). During this race, Rep. Vasquez raised $7 million, compared to Yvette Herrell’s raised $4.4 million. In 2024, political groups collectively spent $17.7 million in this race.
