Malinowski has been the U.S House Representative for the 7th congressional district of New Jersey since 2019. Prior to Congress, Malinowski was the Washington director for Human Rights Watch and served as the Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor from 2014 to 2017.
Under the new lines, Malinowski faces a tough fight in the midterms. Redistricting has made New Jersey’s 7th congressional district redder. The new district no longer includes the Democratic-leaning Montgomery and Millburn counties. In 2020, Rep. Malinowski was narrowly elected by 1.2 points, and President Biden won the district by 10.6 points. Under the new district lines, President Biden would have won the seat by 4.5 points. Additionally, scrutiny over Malinowski’s failure to disclose his stock transactions has added vulnerability to his reelection campaign. Malinowski is running against moderate state Sen. Tom Kean Jr. In the third quarter of 2022, Lee raised $1.8 million and has around $2.7 million in cash on hand, significantly more than Kean Jr., who raised $865,000 and has nearly $1.5 million in cash on hand.
