Democratic Toss Up

Cartwright has been serving as the U.S House Representative for Pennsylvania’s 8th congressional district since 2019. He also served as the U.S House Representative for Pennsylvania’s 17th congressional district from 2013 to 2019. Prior to Congress, Cartwright worked as an attorney.

Redistricting has made Pennsylvania’s 8th congressional district marginally more Democratic. However, this seat continues to be a top target for the GOP. In 2020, Rep. Cartwright was reelected by 3.6 points, and former President Trump won the district by 4.5 points. Under the new district lines, Trump would have won the seat by 2.9 points. Rep. Cartwrigtht is currently one of only seven Democrats who represent a district that Trump won in 2020. Cartwright is running against political consultant Jim Bognet. This is expected to be a highly competitive race, and the NRCC has listed this seat as one it hopes to win in the midterms. In the third quarter of 2022, Cartwright raised $1.1 million and has nearly $1.2 million in cash on hand, significantly more than Bognet, who raised $908,590 and has $691,319 cash on hand.
