Slotkin has served as the U.S House Representative for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District since 2019. Prior to Congress, Slotkin was the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs for the CIA from 2014 to 2017. Additionally, Slotkin is an Iraq veteran and has served on President George W. Bush’s national security staff.
Currently representing Michigan’s 8th congressional district, Rep. Slotkin will seek reelection in the state’s newly drawn 7th district, which encompasses a majority of her current constituents. Redistricting has made Michigan’s 7th congressional district marginally bluer. In 2020, Rep. Slotkin was reelected by 3.6 points, and former President Trump won the district by 0.9 points. Under the new district lines, President Biden would have won the seat by 0.9 points. Slotkin is running against GOP challenger Iraq veteran and state Sen. Tom Barrett. The GOP believed his veteran background will neutralize Slotkin’s national security background. In the third quarter of 2022, Slotkin raised nearly $1.9 million and has $3.7 million in cash on hand, substantially more than Barrett, who raised $670,000 and has only $115,000 cash on hand.
