Partisan Voter Index (PVI): R+1

Democratic Toss Up

Kildee has served as the U.S. House of Representatives for Michigan’s 5th congressional district since 2013. Prior to Congress, he served as Genesee County Commissioner from 1985 to 1997, and as Genesee County Treasurer from 1997 to 2009. He later co-founded the non-profit Center for Community Progress.

Rep. Kildee will run in the newly drawn 8th congressional district, which includes much of his current district. The new map unites Flint with all three Tri-Cities (Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland). Under the new lines, the district is marginally less Democratic. In 2020, Rep. Kildee was reelected by 12.7 points, and President Biden won the district by 4.5 points. Under the new district lines, President Biden would have won the seat by 2.1 points. His seat is less Democratic as his district had to expand into redder areas to make up for population seats. This district is considered a toss-up and Republicans are positioning themselves to invest heavily in an attempt to take this seat. The Republican primary was on August 2, and former CIS offical Paul Jungle secured the nomaniton agter a competive three-way primary race. In the third quarter of 2022, Kildee raised $1.4 million and has $1.6 million in cash on hand, while Jungle raised $900,000 and has $381,000 cash on hand.
