Kuster has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Hampshire’s 2nd congressional district since 2013. Before Congress, Kuster served longtime community activist and adoption attorney who focused her career on increasing opportunities for Granite State families.
A court-appointed special master drew New Hampshire’s new districts after the GOP-controlled legislature and Republican Gov. Chris Sununu (R) failed to reach a consensus on a new map. In 2020 Kuster was reelected by 10.2 points, and President Biden won the district by 8.9 points. Under the new district lines, President Biden would have won the district by 9 points. In the 2nd district, the GOP field against Kuster has been slower to develop due to the redistricting waiting game but with the current political climate, it is still considered a competitive race. Rep. Kuster will most likely run against Keene Mayor George Hansel (R), a businessman and local politician who was recruited by Governor Sununu to run. In 2019, Hansel was elected to lead the state’s sixth-largest city (which voted for Joe Biden by 40 points) in a nonpartisan race with support from prominent local Democrats. Hansel will face off against six other GOP candidates in the September Republican primary. Kuster has a significant fundraising advantage; she raised $711,000 in the third quarter and has $2.6 million cash on hand. Meanwhile, Hansel raised $32,000 in the second quarter and has $58,000 cash on hand.
